Five reasons why this decorated Real Madrid defender could be a good signing for Arsenal

first_img1 Alvaro Arbeloa is being linked with Arsenal Strong reports in Spain claim that Arsene Wenger wants to sign Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa this summer. The Spaniard played for Liverpool from 2007 until 2009 before returning to boyhood club Madrid, and while he may not be the most exciting name in the summer market, he could be a smart transfer. talkSPORT looks at five things the player could offer the Gunners…1: VersatilityArbeloa would be coming in to replace Thomas Vermaelen at the Emirates, and the Madrid man ticks an important box in that capacity: he can play across the back four. As well as his usual role at right back, Arbeloa has regularly filled in at left back during his career, while he can also play in the middle of the back four. That’s an attractive quality for any club, and Arsenal are no exception.2: ExperienceWith 56 Spain caps to his name, over 100 games for Real Madrid in the Champions League and La Liga, as well as time at Liverpool and Deportivo in the top flight, Arbeloa has a huge deal of experience across all competitions. While Mathieu Debuchy is already the finished article, Calum Chambers is only 19 and relatively untested at the highest level, so if the Gunners are going to bring in a third defender as is being suggested, it makes sense to look for someone at the opposite end of the spectrum from the former Southampton man.3: Ease of adaptationThe big concern when signing any player from abroad is how well he will adapt to the Premier League, and that’s particularly important in a key position like centre back or full back. In Arbeloa, Arsene Wenger has no such doubts, given the 66 appearances he made for Liverpool in the English top flight. The Spaniard should be able to hit the ground running if he does end up at the Emirates.4: AvailabilityAlmost every top European side is looking for a new defender this summer, but the reality is that not many with proven experience are available. If the Gunners do lose Thomas Vermaelen as seems to be the case, then they will have a big task finding someone of similar stature ready to join the club. Crucially, Arbeloa is available: Real Madrid have plenty of cover at full back with Nacho, Dani Carvajal, Marcelo and Fabio Coentrao, while at centre back they have Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, so it makes sense for the Spaniard to look elsewhere for regular football. Arsenal are unlikely to find a better option this summer.5: PersonalityArbeloa isn’t afraid to stick his head above the parapet and is known to be an extremely driven footballer, a quality which endeared him to Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s time at the Bernabeu. With Arsenal looking to push on from their FA Cup win to a sustained challenge for the Premier League, a proven winner like the Madrid man would be a natural fit. Personalities are important in any dressing room, and Arsene Wenger may find the Spaniard’s mentality attractive when looking towards the club’s goals for next season.Arsenal fans, are you convinced?
