Takeaways: Sharks avert disaster with improbable comeback

first_imgWASHINGTON — Apparently, the Sharks and the Washington Capitals lacked the patience to wait until Friday for All Star Weekend to get underway in San Jose. They played an “East Coast version” of the All Star Game in the nation’s capital on Tuesday. The Sharks (29-16-7) averted a near disaster by winning a pond hockey track meet with the Capitals that saw 13 tallies, a combined 82 shots and a tying goal with less than a second remaining in regulation. Mono for Android Open for Developer Testing

first_imgAccording to project head Miguel de Icaza, “all the embarrassing bugs” have now been fixed, and the platform is available for testing by anyone interested in doing so. On his personal blog, de Icaza noted that the project uses a library profile that is better suited for mobile devices. That means they removed features that are not necessary, he says, like the entire System.Configuration stack, just as Silverlight does.“In addition to bringing the core ECMA VM to Android,” ?wrote de Icaza. “We bound the entire set of Android Dalvik APIs to C# and in the process C#-ified them. This includes using C# properties for metadata (less XML config file messing around), exposing C# events, C# properties, strongly typed generic types where necessary, implicit conversions where needed, using the C# API style, IEnumerable where appropriate (to let you LINQ over your Dalvik, and we turn IIterable into IEnumerables for you).”Mono for Android also offers the following:The same OpenTK library popular among .NET developers on Windows, Linux, iPhone, allowing you to share the same OpenGL logic across platforms.Support for the full JIT (unlike iOS)Templates for C# (but other .NET compilers should work, if they reference MonoDroid’s libraries).Last, but certainly not least, MonoDroid is now supported on Mac OS X. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Google Express is having a big sale as well, one that includes deals on game consoles, AirPods, iPhones, laptops and more.Below I’ve rounded up a handful of individual items I consider to be the cream of the crop, followed by a handy reference guide to other Labor Day sales. Keep in mind, of course, that products may sell out at any time, even if the sale itself is still running. Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page. Though not technically a Labor Day sale, it’s happening during Labor Day sale season — and it’s too good not to share. Nationwide Distributors, via Google Express, has just about the best AirPods deal we’ve seen (when you apply promo code ZBEDWZ at checkout). The Cheapskate $999 Read Lenovo Smart Clock review Recently updated to include digital-photo-frame capabilities, the Lenovo Smart Clock brings Google Assistant goodness to your nightstand. It’s a little smaller than the Amazon Echo Show 5, but also a full $30 less (and tied with Prime Day pricing) during this Best Buy Labor Day sale. Apple AirPods with Wireless Charging Case: $155 (save $45) I thought this might be a mistake, but, no, the weirdly named HP Laptop 15t Value is indeed quite the value at this price. Specs include an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 15.6-inch display. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. Read the Rylo camera preview $59 at eBay Tags $261 at Daily Steals via Google Express The problem with most entry-level laptops: They come with mechanical hard drives. That makes for a mighty slow Windows experience. This Lenovo model features a 128GB solid-state drive, so it should be pretty quick to boot and load software, even with its basic processor. Plus, it has a DVD-burner! That’s not something you see in many modern laptops, especially at this price. Tags Best laptops for college students: We’ve got an affordable laptop for every student. You can now back your use of the phrase “May the 4th be with you” with a state resolution. The California Legislature on Thursday declared May 4 Star Wars Day in celebration of Disneyland’s upcoming attraction, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The theme park is set to open later this month. The saying “May the 4th be with you” is a spin on the popular Star Wars phrase “May the force be with you.”The California resolution was authored by Democratic Assemblyman Tom Daly. It says Anaheim, where Disneyland is located, will benefit from Galaxy’s Edge by getting “at least $14 million more in tax revenues per year.” The expansion will also create 1,400 permanent jobs, according to the resolution.  The Legislature says it “commends the Disneyland Resort and the Walt Disney Company for their decades-long record of enhancing the quality of life for people in California and beyond.” Disneyland, Orange County’s largest employer, generates $5.7 billion for southern California’s economy, according to the resolution.  Turo: Save $30 on any car rental Boost Mobile Review • iPhone XS review, updated: A few luxury upgrades over the XR See at Turo 0 Turo is kind of like Uber meets Airbnb: You borrow someone’s car, but you do all the driving.
